Sir, - Your homilist F.MacE. (Thinking Anew, August 31st) said he was almost turned on end by reading the gospel story where Jesus says to the Canaanite woman: "It is not right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs!".

His initial reaction was to think that Jesus showed "an unreasonable bigotry and that must constitute a sin!".

While graciously resolving the difficulty by suggesting that we do not know the wider context of the story, he leaves us with an unresolved question: What might a reasonable bigotry be, and what might its ramifications be for ecumenism and the Northern conflict? - Yours, etc.,
