Property prices and property tax

Sir, – If ever there was an example of the inequity and unfairness of the current property tax regime it is contained in "Dublin houses will hit boom prices within a year, report says" (News, September 4th). Apart from the increasing house prices, which will increase the property tax burden, your article highlights the price discrepancies by location and notes similar-sized houses in Dublin 4 and Longford, the former being priced at €975,000 and the latter at €97,000, a staggering difference and ultimately an unfair tax bill. It illustrates very clearly that an equitable tax is one based on square footage and not market value. – Yours, etc,
