PARABLES FOR OUR TIMES

Madam, - We live in fabulous times. Twice in one week fables have appeared in your Letters page. First, there was the Rev David O'Hanlon's Parable of the Uninvited Stranger (July 1st). This stands out in sorrowful contrast to the parables of Jesus Christ, such as the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and the Lost Sheep. Something very, very, important in his story is missing. Could it be love?

More positively, there was Maurice Ahern's Fable of the Gooseberry Snipper (July 2nd). Surely there is inspiration to be gained here. Could not the entire Cabinet follow their leader's example and go a-huntin', a-pickin' and a-snippin' gooseberries? Think of the immense economic benefits that would flow, ensuring this country's ticket to a continuing and equitable prosperity.

Fabulous Irish Times! - Yours etc.,
