Madam, – My heart bleeds for Michael Canney (May 12th) and all the other under-50s who feel they have suffered a raw deal at the hands of us well-to-do oldies.

I often wonder if these moaners have any idea of what life was like in the 1970s and 1980s for the majority of people who scrimped and saved every spare penny so that the current crop would have a better start in life.

Even allowing for the shock of a crash landing, this country still enjoys a relatively high standard of living.

Many under-50s are living in fear of a return to the desperate living standards of 2003. How will they ever survive the shock of life without their iPods? – Yours, etc,
