Sir, - The construction of the monument on O'Connell Street to commemorate the millennium must indeed be applauded. It will stand as Ireland's contribution to a worldwide celebration of the dawning of a new age.
However, it must be more than merely a monolith to be gawked at by Dubliners and tourists alike.
May I propose a slight alteration in its design which would allow this edifice to take on a more utilitarian meaning? A special, pay-per-use public toilet could be installed in the base. This would be connected to a hoist which would, upon the insertion of the proper fee, propel the user to the top of the spire where a spectacular panorama of the Dublin skyline would add an overwhelming sense of awe to the mundane task of performing certain bodily functions.
I would further propose that unofficially this specially modified monument be dubbed: "The Loo with a View". - Yours, etc., Edward D. Rafferty,
