Maths in schools and universities

A chara, – The suggestion made by Gus Jones (December 17th) that the Department of Education ought to pay higher salaries to teachers who have postgraduate qualifications appears to be based on the assumption that those with deeper knowledge of a subject make better teachers. I would disagree.

Pedagogy at any level, particularly post-primary, is more about personality and the ability to engage students than it is about scholarly prowess.
