Sir, - The most recent lives claimed by the notorious Arklow-Rathnew stretch of the N11 highlights the tragic consequences of a government road strategy that values faster travel above everything else.
The number of deaths caused by speeding on all Irish roads, not just the N11, is a national shame. However, the message given by a road policy which advocates more and wider roads to accommodate more and faster traffic serves only to encourage this madness. Surely it is time for a rethink?
As the Glen of the Downs vigil enters its third year, we are broadening our campaign to include ideas for viable alternative road plans to the one proposed. We are advocating that the stretch of N11 that runs through the Glen nature reserve can be used to shift our mind-set into a new perspective. One which promotes a more humane relationship between people, cars, and the environment.
The Glen of the Downs provides a wonderful opportunity for Wicklow County Council to demonstrate an enlightened way forward. With appropriate technology and engineering, a practical alternative to the intrusive development planned could be found, one that would respect the integrity of this beautiful and unique ecosystem.
As Judge Kearns said in his summing up of our case at the High Court, signs could be placed on the northern and southern approaches to the Glen instructing drivers to slow down. We would add that they should also be told that they are about to pass through a national nature reserve and one of the jewels of Wicklow, Garden of Ireland.
This would not only conserve the Glen, save lives and help stressed motorists, but educate the public towards an appreciation of the gifts of peace and healing offered by the natural world. - Yours etc., Maria Mason,
Glen O' Downs Tree Vigil, Co. Wicklow.
