Sir, - The preservation of our national forests is our responsibility. Each year millions visit them to walk or picnic. They enjoy the unique and tranquil environment our forests provide.
The planned development for Glen of the Downs will cut through Irish wilderness at its very best and destroy a beautiful and ancient area. Traffic growth cannot be endlessly accommodated and should instead be constrained as far as possible. New and expanding roads generate new traffic. In regions of such incalculable natural value, alternative solutions must be found.
We are too complacent and too reluctant to assert our rights to our national heritage. By sitting back and allowing such developments to take place we are sending out the wrong signals. All too soon there will be little left to remind us of what was once so much part of us. - Yours, etc., Eoin O'Sullivan,
Greystones, Co Wicklow.
