A chara, - In his book The Joys of Yiddish, Leo Rosten defined chutzpah as being possessed of the ability, having murdered both your parents, to plead for mercy on the grounds that you are an orphan.

If Mr Rosten were alive today he would have found a less grisly example in Dr Garret FitzGerald's attack on Charlie McCreevy in your edition of August 24th - a lesson in economics from the man whose own Government doubled the national debt, ran constant Budget over-runs and left over 250,000 people unemployed despite net emigration.
