Sir, - The current campaign to reduce road deaths is admirable in its intention but questionable in the simple but lucrative targeting of drivers who exceeding speed limits. The authorities should consider focusing on other hazardous factors, such as: 1. The age and poor state of many cars on the roads. There is still no vehicle testing, so bangers in dubious condition may be driven freely.
2. The appalling condition of agricultural vehicles in particular, especially their lighting and signals. 3. The questionable driving ability of many road users and the ease with which a provisional licence may be acquired, as well as in ad the fact that many fully licensed drivers never passed a test in the first place.
4. The "innovative" design of many road junctions, which put road users in peril through downright bad design. 5. Jay walking, which is practised with a sense of pride and without fear of any official intervention.
Speeding drivers are taking the all the flak for far more widespread problems. - Yours, etc.,
Raymond O'leary,
Arran Quay, Dublin 7.
