Sir, - Until the day I die I will always remember where I was when I heard the news that Joey Dunlop, human being extraordinaire, was killed. Like many others around the world, I couldn't have been more shocked had it been the death of a loved one.
Joey's skill and bravery as a motorcyclist was second to none but over his phenomenal career other wonderful traits emerged: his charity work, his humility, his honesty, his modesty. To his many fans he was a truly accessible superstar. As one TV reporter said, "The only person who did not think Joey Dunlop was a star was Joey Dunlop."
How refreshing it always was to see the modesty and down-to-earthness displayed by Joey whenever he was a winner. In a world of inflated egos and massive salaries this, indeed, is a rarity. May his sportsmanship live on forever. - Yours, etc.,
Damien Boyd, Cork.
