Community CCTV schemes

A scheme described as “the most advanced” CCTV system of its kind in Ireland went live in the Co Meath village of Duleek in July. Its 14 cameras monitor Duleek and neighbouring Donore, which have a combined population of just over 5,000.

Sir, – I would hope that the data commissioner’s office would have a chat with some of the recent victims of roving gangs of thieves before it decides to remove those CCTV cameras in Duleek, Co Meath (“Data Protection Commissioner raises CCTV concerns with Garda”, November 16th).

Perhaps a pensioner would prefer to give up some data protection in favour of real protection. – Yours, etc,

JOHN ROGERS,

Rathowen,

Co Westmeath.
