Health service must be provided with necessary resources

Otherwise, delays are inevitable

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – The Department of Health insisting on sanctioning all recruitment decisions while noting that the HSE remains responsible for all clinical risk is akin to the officer class sending the troops into battle with insufficient numbers and blaming them for defeat (“Health staff face sweeping promotion restrictions under spending controls”, Health, October 24th).

If the health service is not provided with the necessary resources, adverse events are inevitable. The public should be in no doubt who should bear the responsibility for the further delays in receiving care. In case there is any uncertainty, that responsibility falls on the Department of Health. – Yours, etc,

Dr PEADAR GILLIGAN,

Consultant in emergency medicine,
