Bitter dispute on raised bogs

Sir, – The article on the above topic (Paddy Woodworth, Opinion, August 2nd) reminded me why I still buy The Irish Times every day. Conflict on our bogs has featured in the media over a number of years, as another obscure, intractable dispute, where the underlying issues are past understanding by the rest of us. Your article represented a refreshing change and was, in my view, a masterclass in its analysis of the situation and the education of the reader. The failures of politicians and the departments and agencies they lead, as well as a "widespread reluctance to fully embrace any principle of the common good" are identified as key causes of the impasse.

Sadly, for the people of this Republic, these same causes can be associated with much bigger problems than those of the raised bogs. – Yours, etc,

PAT O’RIORDAN,

Castleconnell, Co Limerick.
