Sir, - The Irish Medicines Board has banned the herbal remedy Kava kava, citing the grounds that its use has caused liver damage to some users in Germany and Switzerland.

Reports suggest that about 30 people may have been affected,

I and thousands of other Irish people have an anaphylactic reaction - an unpredictable reaction that can kill in 10 minutes - to penicillin. I call on the Irish Medicines Board to ban the use of penicillin and all its derivatives at once, applying the same criteria as have been applied in the banning of Kava kava. - Yours, etc.,
