Iarnród Éireann station facilities a disgrace to our transport network

Sir, – I recently undertook a rail journey from Dundalk to Killarney – a route that should showcase the absolute best of Irish hospitality, sustainable travel and regional connectivity. Unfortunately, my journey was marred before I even boarded the train.

Prior to my departure, I had occasion to use the public gentlemen’s toilets at Dundalk station. To say they are antiquated would be a generous understatement. The facilities were unacceptably dirty, neglected and, frankly, a disgrace to our national transport network.

At a time when the Government and local authorities are investing heavily in promoting regional Ireland to international visitors, and actively encouraging citizens to ditch the car in favour of public transport, the first impression offered at Dundalk is deeply embarrassing. Station amenities are not a luxury; they are a basic component of public dignity and customer service.

That Iarnród Éireann can leave the facilities at a major commuter and cross-Border hub in such a dilapidated state is a poor reflection on their operational standards. If we are serious about building a world-class public transport system, Irish Rail must start with the basics. – Yours, etc,
