Sir, – With the current high temperatures, people are understandably flocking to beaches. My family found it so hot yesterday that we went to Seapoint in Dún Laoghaire, which had hundreds of people both in the water and out of the water. I have never seen it like this, and when I went into the water, an elderly man beside me reported that it was like the Ganges and he was right.
What came to mind is that Dublin is bursting, and Dublin beaches were bursting yesterday. What is concerning was the amount of rubbish around. One brave young man kept telling his friends to pick up their rubbish and I commend him.
The bins were full and overflowing. There was lots of rubbish in the sea. Dún Laoghaire council have their work cut out cleaning this up and there is probably a need for more bins at beaches as people try to cool down from the high temperatures.
It really made me wonder why, when we are going to have more heat events, we don’t have more outdoor swimming options. In Europe there are so many outdoor swimming pools, even near beaches in France. In Germany and Austria there are lots of freibad – outdoor swimming pools where people can cool down.

It would really make sense for the Government and councils to invest in more outdoor pools around the country and stop overcrowding on beaches, especially in cities. Climate change is with us now and we need to adapt to it. – Yours, etc,
