In concert with a Honda 50 – our convoy to see Bruce Springsteen

Glory Days remembered as trio of friends set off from South County Dublin for Slane

Sir, – All this Honda 50 correspondence brings me back to that glorious day in summer 1985 when Bruce Springsteen played at Slane Castle.

At the time I had only recently acquired a second-hand Honda 50 at the age of 19 and was accompanied by two equally fresh-faced pals who had also joined the proud ranks of second-hand Honda 50 owners.

Together we set off in high spirits for Slane, Co Meath, in a mini Honda 50 convoy from South County Dublin; the sheer freedom and joy of that journey lives with me to this day.

On arrival in Slane we were shepherded into the “bikers” field where we encountered a collection of leather-clad grizzled bike owners who were clearly underwhelmed by our choice of transport. A collection of much cooler Kawasakis, Yamahas and more powerful Hondas were scattered about the place and our sense of self esteem was faltering fast.

We pressed on undeterred and on our return we struck up a conversation with a friendly biker who told me I was the sort of fellah that if he had grabbed me by the collar and demanded I give him 50p I would most likely have replied: “My Mummy only gave me a pound.”

Great memories all made possible by the wonderful Honda 50. – Yours, etc,

JOHN LOMBARD,

Goatstown,

Dublin 14.
