Trump’s chilling threats must not go unchecked

History will be a harsh judge of leaders who fail to step up

Sir, – In a message posted on Truth Social, US president Donald Trump has threatened to obliterate all of the electricity-generating plants in Iran.

To do such a thing would constitute a war crime. Given its premeditation and potential to cause widespread suffering among the civilian population (including deaths), such an act could also be considered a crime against humanity if it happened.

Surely, the time has come for democratically elected leaders to publicly and unambiguously denounce Trump – and to call for an immediate end to this reckless war.

History will judge sycophancy, evasiveness and diplomatic euphemisms among our leaders as moral cowardice. – Yours, etc,

CHRIS FITZPATRICK,
