‘If a private landlord acted like Dublin City Council, they would be in court and paying fines’

The fact local authority tenants do not have recourse to the Residential Tenancies Board is beyond belief

Letter of the Day

Sir, – As a small landlord registered with the Residential Tenancies Board, we have an obligation to deal with any problems that tenants in our properties may have in a timely manner. That means if damp appears or if any rodents are seen in the environs of the property, we have to get someone to deal with the problem as soon as possible – usually within a week or two maximum.

It was shocking to me that tenants who are with the biggest landlord in the State – Dublin City Council – have been waiting years and years for their problems to be addressed. (“Overcrowding, mould and rats in Ireland’s social housing” February 1st)

Plans have been made, changed, made again. But nothing happens. If a private landlord did this, they would be in court and paying fines. The fact that local authority tenants do not have recourse to the Residential Tenancies Board is beyond belief. Is there no other legal challenge that these tenants can take? I hope members of the Bar Council are listening.

Shankill,
