Sir, – Ireland has now hit the shameful milestone of having more than 5,000 babies, toddlers, young children and teenagers experiencing the trauma of homelessness (“More than 5,000 children in emergency accommodation as homelessness hit new high”, News, August 29th).
The monthly homeless report released last Friday should be a wake-up call. We have been waiting a decade for this emergency to be addressed. The urgency isn’t there, it seems. It also seems there is a lack of care about the devastating impact this experience has on children.
The figure of 5,014 children in official emergency accommodation is just the tip of the iceberg. We know that many thousands more are being accommodated in direct provision, in domestic violence refuges and in inappropriate, overcrowded and insecure housing. – Yours, etc,
BER GROGAN,
