Sir, – John McManus writes that Derek Quinlan “was bought down by nit-picking civil servants hell bent on looking after the interests of taxpayers” (“Was Derek Quinlan punished for having an astute businesswoman for a wife? Looks like it”, Business, Opinion, November 6th).
The civil servants employed by the Revenue Commissions of the Irish Government are ensuring that tax debts are paid by all who are legally obliged to pay such debts. The example given in the article clearly shows that an unpaid debt of £400 million remains unpaid.
Debts unpaid do result in bankruptcy, which is part of our legal process.
Whether one is a “business colossus”, as described in the article, or a PAYE employee, both should and are treated similarly. – Yours, etc,
PATRICK T REYNOLDS,
Greystones,
Co Wicklow.
