Sir, – Dr Declan Deasy (Letters, August 7th) is correct when he states that Jack Horgan-Jones’s article on cyberattack risk is “another timely reminder of the fragility of our digital infrastructures worldwide and the potential for disruption from malicious attacks” (“Ireland faces far greater cyberattack risk over next two years, security centre warns”, News, August 6th).
In the case of Ireland, hopefully this will be a wake-up call to those who foolishly believe the best way to defend our society from outside forces is by ditching our military neutrality, joining Nato and pouring billions into our Defence Forces. Such wasteful, old-school thinking will do little to protect us.
The greatest external threats to our society come not from a physical invasion but from the internet.
Ensuring that a well-funded and robust cyber security ecosystem exists in the State is therefore paramount. Neutrality navel-gazing only deflects from this goal. – Yours, etc,
