Sir, – In all of the recent political upheaval, the media largely overlooked the Labour Party conference and the speech of the party leader, Ivana Bacik, which was notable for the fact that she repeatedly addressed party delegates as “comrades”, the first time in many years that a Labour leader had used this kind of terminology.
This clearly illustrates two things about Labour’s recent trajectory – first, the desperate need to pretend that the party is still socialist, and second, the use of every available opportunity to demonstrate how out of touch the party is with ordinary voters. – Yours, etc,
