Sir, – When Michael D Higgins reneged on his promise to serve only one term in office, he must have given himself carte blanche to ride over the protocol expected of a president. He must be laughing up his sleeve at the inability or reluctance of anyone to control him as he continues to speak out of turn. – Yours, etc,

Patrick Honohan: Ireland surfed the wave of globalisation as long as we could. Here’s what we should do next
Cathy Gannon: ‘I used to ride my pony to school, tie him up and ride him back’
The Guildford Four’s Paddy Armstrong: ‘People thought I was going to be bitter and twisted when I came out of prison’
Sir, – President Higgins’s timing regarding the expression of his personal opinions about the United Nations is in my view disrespectful and unwelcome. It seems he chose this moment to embarrass the Government, and at the ploughing championships, of all places.
Whatever about making a channel slice, he certainly knows how to plough a crooked furrow. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – How our President views the UN is much how I view our President.
Much posturing, many words, yet few deeds. – Yours, etc,
