Sir, – Now that the Government has agreed to extend the fuel support scheme for a further two months, costing an extra €400 million, with the possibility of further extensions remaining on the table, would the Irish haulage industry, for their part, agree to drive within the speed limits and obey the rules governing the use of lanes, particularly on our motorways?
As a frequent user of the M50 and M1 motorways, I see trucks driving at 100km/h and more on a very regular basis. Official sources tell us that such high speeds in lorries involves significant additional fuel usage.
Abiding by maximum speed limits would make a critical contribution to reducing the cost of haulage for everyone’s benefit. It would also serve to acknowledge the taxpayers’ very significant assistance to the haulage industry at this time of high fuel prices, as well as being a valuable road safety measure. – Yours, etc,
