A Second World War shell was defused in west Belfast today, police said.

British army bomb disposal experts made safe the explosive device which was found on a building site between Suffolk Road and Colinglen Forest Park.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the shell was two feet long and three inches in diameter and warned the public to be on the lookout for others.

She said: "As it is possible this is not the only shell on the building site, police are appealing to anyone who comes across any similar type of device or unusual object to contact them immediately."
