Tiger Woods will miss the first US PGA tournament of the season as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

Organisers at the Mercedes Championship in Hawaii have confirmed the world number one's absence from the event, which tees off on January 9th.

Woods had successful surgery on his left knee last week to remove fluid from in and around the anterior cruciate ligament.

He said: "I had been playing in pain most of the year and felt it was time to take care of it".
