London - An English woman admitted in court yesterday that she had microwaved her pet cat after she was bitten by one of its fleas.

Ms Nadine Trewin (31), from Crawley, pleaded guilty to cruelty after she admitted microwaving ginger-haired Sasha, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said. "She claimed that the cat jumped into the microwave, she shut the door of the microwave and it switched itself on," a spokeswoman said.

Ms Trewin, who the court heard had drunk a lot of beer and wine, took the cat out of the microwave and then threw it out of the window because it was hot. She buried the cat, which had died very quickly afterwards, in the back garden, but the RSPCA dug up the body after Ms Trewin told a neighbour what she had done. She was sentenced to two years' rehabilitation and banned from keeping animals for five years.
