Visiting restrictions remain in place at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin following an outbreak of norovirus, otherwise known as the winter vomiting bug.

The hospital has appealed to the public not to make unnecessary visits while it deals with the virus.

"Only visits which are absolutely essential are allowed and are restricted to two visitors per patient," it said in a statement.

"No children are allowed to visit under any circumstances."

Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, usually lasts 24 to 48 hours and does not usually require medical treatment.
