Vatican City - The Vatican said yesterday Israel's controversial plans to build a mosque near the main Christian shrine in Nazareth were a hindrance to preparations for a visit by Pope John Paul.

"It is not superfluous to observe that such a situation does not help in the preparation of a possible pilgrimage by the Holy Father to that illustrious sanctuary," the Chief Vatican spokesman, Dr Joaquin Navarro-Valls, said.
