The United States today formally resumed its diplomatic ties with Libya after  24 years.

US Assistant Secretary of State Mr William Burns said in a statement he had formally inaugurated the new US Liaison Office in Tripoli and resumption of direct diplomatic ties.

Burns met Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and other Libyan government ministers.
