Washington - The US flag is to be lowered today from the US Southern Command headquarters in Quarry Heights, Panama, ending an 80-year run as the senior US command in South and Central America.
It is the latest step in a gradual reduction of US troops in Panama under the 1977 Panama Canal Treaties that call for the withdrawal of all US forces by the year 2000.
