Druid Theatre co-founder Garry Hynes has won the best director honour at the UK Theatre Awards in London.

Hynes won the award for her work on Druid Murphy – Plays by Tom Murphy which received critical acclaim in the Hampstead Theatre, London, last June. The plays – Conversations on a Homecoming, A Whistle in the Dark and Famine – tell the story of Irish emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Receiving her award at the city’s Guildhall at the weekend, Hynes dedicated it to the playwright. “I would like to dedicate this to Tom Murphy and to all those, on and off stage, who have helped to make Druid Murphy happen,” she said.

The three plays were also brought to the New York stage by the Druid troupe.

Theatre Awards UK is the only awards scheme to honour creative excellence and the outstanding achievement seen on and off stage throughout Britain and Northern Ireland.
