It could be several days before a major bomb alert is cleared in Co Tyrone.
A red van with a gas cylinder inside was found at Altmore Forest near Gallbally, the RUC said.
Security forces fear it may have a bomb left by dissident republicans.
In other news, a 20-year-old man in Belfast was recovering in hospital after being wounded in the ankles and legs in a "punishment shooting" by republicans.
