Beijing - China has sentenced a democracy activist, Wang Tingjin, to two years in a labour camp for meeting a US-based dissident who sneaked into the country in February, according to a Hong Kong-based human rights group.

Police had taken Wang Tingjin (43), a mathematics teacher, from his home in central Anhui province last week, the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China said.

In another development, China has denied that it released the jailed dissident, Wang Dan, as part of a deal with the US.
