A lifeboat has rescued two people on Belfast Lough after they got into difficulty at Whitehead Bay this evening.

The RNLI Bangor lifeboat launched at 6.30pm to rescue the two people from a dingy and canoe after they were observed in distress 100 yards from shore.

A member of the public made a 999 call to the Belfast coastguard after witnessing a Topper dingy capsizing and the mast rigging fail.

RNLI crew said they believed a teenage girl in a canoe had "bravely gone to the aid of the struggling sailor".

The lifeboat arrived on the scene at 6.45pm and took the man and the girl - his daughter - to safety.

Volunteer crew member Darren Byers, who assisted in the rescue, urged anyone engaged in water-based activities to always wear a lifejacket or appropriate buoyancy aid, to have some means of calling for help and to check weather conditions and tides.
