Two people have been rescued off the Clare coastline after their boat developed engine problems.

The boat was seen drifting dangerously close to cliffs on the southside of Liscannor, Co Clare, before the alarm was raised at around 3 pm.

Members of the Lahinch rescue team and the Doolin Irish Coastguard Unit arrived at the scene about 15 minutes after a helicopter which was despatched from Shannon Airport.

The crews managed to tow the boat and its two man crew to safety despite poor visibility, shortly after 4 pm.

Both men are in their forties and are understood to have been uninjured.
