The discovery comes just hours after one US soldier was killed and four others were wounded in the latest in a spate of guerrilla-style attacks as occupation forces struggle to impose peace.

At least 22 Americans have been killed by hostile fire in Iraq since major combat operations were declared over on May 1st.

The soldiers were recovered approximately 20 miles northwest of Baghdad US Central Command said.

A senior US military officer in Iraq attributed the recent attacks to loyalists of ousted leader Saddam Hussein and militants linked to his outlawed Baath Party, but grenade launchers and AK-47 assault rifles are common in the country.

"The first clear message that we have to take out of here is that this war is not over. I think that is pretty clear to all of us," the senior officer told reporters.
