Gardaí in Drogheda are searching for two men who assaulted and raped a teenage girl.

The 17-year-old had been walking on her own in the early hours of last Tuesday week when the two men dragged her up a sheltered and unlit laneway off Wellington Quay, a few hundred yards from the town centre.

Gardaí investigating the crime admit they are "shocked" by the viciousness of the assault.

As well as the physical injuries, which required hospital treatment, the girl has been traumatised and there is serious concern about the effect of the attack on her.

A Garda spokesman said this afternoon the investigation was ongoing.
