A car with two female occupants crashed on the northbound lane of the M18 at Ballylion, Barefield close to Ennis, Co Clare, shortly before 4pm.

A woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene and the second woman, believed to be in her 40s, sustained minor injuries.

The northbound carriageway is closed to traffic and diversions are in place. The southbound carriageway remains open.

Meanwhile, gardaí at Tuam are investigating a single-vehicle collision at Kildaree, Williamstown, Co Galway at about 9.15am this morning after which the driver died.

A car carrying three people hit a wall and the driver, a male in his early 50s, was seriously injured. He was pronounced dead at Mayo General Hospital this afternoon. The other occupants, two females, were not seriously injured.

The area was sealed off for a forensic collision investigation and the road has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Tuam Garda station on 093-70840.
