At least two people have been killed and 10 injured when an Indian air force jet crashed into an office building.

At least two people have been killed and 10 injured when an Indian air force jet crashed into an office building.

The plane was on a routine flight when the accident happened in Jullundur in Punjab state.

The Soviet-made MiG-21 nose-dived into the building, which houses a bank and shops. The bank building and two adjacent houses caught fire.

A doctor at the town's hospital, said: "We have two dead bodies and 10 injured here. Eight of them are critical, the injuries are mostly due to the fire".

At least six bank employees and customers were in the bank at the time of the crash. The pilot and co-pilot bailed out and used their parachutes to land. Their injuries are not known.

"I saw the fighter jet roll over a couple of times before it hurtled down," a witness said.

The fighter jet had taken off from the nearby Adampur air force base and was on a routine flight when it crashed, said the Defence Ministry's spokesman.
