Two men have been remanded in custody after they were charged yesterday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a father of two during a row in Cork city early Saturday morning.
Jason Quinlan (28) and John Brett (24) were charged at separate court sittings with assault causing harm to 24-year-old Brian McKee at Ballinure Avenue, Mahon, Cork on August 25th.
Mr Quinlan, originally from Ringmahon Close, Mahon but with an address at Loughmahon Drive, Mahon was brought before Cork District Court yesterday morning where he was charged with the offence.
Insp Colm O'Sullivan said that gardaí were seeking a remand in custody for a week and Mr Quinlan's solicitor, Eddie Burke, said his client wasn't seeking bail at this stage but may make an application later.
Mr Burke applied for free legal aid for Mr Quinlan who is on disability allowance. Judge Tim Lucey granted free legal aid and remanded Mr Quinlan in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on September 3rd.
Later yesterday evening, John Brett was brought before a special sitting of Mallow District Court.
Supt Mick Finn of Anglesea Street Garda station in Cork city applied to have Mr Brett remanded in custody.
Solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher made no application for bail but expressed concern for his client's safety if he were remanded in custody to Cork Prison.
Judge Tim Lucey said he had no say as to where Mr Brett would be held as that was a matter for the prison service. Supt Finn said he would convey Mr Kelleher's concerns to the prison governor.
The judge then remanded Mr Brett, whose address was given as Leitrim Street, Cork, in custody to appear again at Cork District Court next Monday, September 3rd.
