Turkey to renew bid for EU membership

Mr Sezer is set to accompany the newly elected prime minister, who has yet to be named after last Sunday's election, to the EU…

Turkish President Mr Ahmet Necdet Sezer plans to attend next month's EU summit in Copenhagen to help Ankara's bid to join the EU.

Mr Sezer is set to accompany the newly elected prime minister, who has yet to be named after last Sunday's election, to the EU meeting beginning December 12th in Copenhagen, an adviser said.

The EU last month declined to give Turkey a date to start talks on joining the European Union, which had been a key goal of outgoing Prime Minister Mr Bulent Ecevit's government.

Mr Ecevit and the parties in his coalition government lost heavily in the election, not winning a single seat between them, as the Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan won a majority in parliament.

Mr Erdogan, barred from public office because of a 1998 conviction for Islamist sedition, said the failure to set a date for the talks at the Copenhagen summit would not harm Ankara's relations with the EU. His party has not yet proposed a candidate to become prime minister.
