The State's trout farming industry is now worth more than £2.5 million annually, and produces some 1,400 tonnes of fish. The industry has further scope for development, the Minister of State for the Marine, Mr Hugh Byrne, said in Wexford yesterday when he published a code of practice for the sector.

The code of practice was drawn up by Bord Iascaigh Mhara and sets out guidelines for farming of freshwater rainbow trout from hatchery stage to the fish counter. The document covers best husbandry practice, environmental responsibilities and hygiene standards.
