Traffic diversions are in place on the main Dublin to Sligo road following a serious crash just outside Kinnegad.
The collision between a lorry and at least two cars took place shortly after 7 p.m. on the Mulligar side of the village.
A number of people have reportedly been injured but their injuries are not yet known.
Westbound traffic from Dublin is being diverted onto the N6 towards Athlone while vehicles travelling towards Dublin are being asked to divert via Miltownpass.
