LONDON - The Conservative MP for Luton North, Mr John Carlisle, has been condemned from all sides, including his own party, after accusing Dunblane parents of "emotion and hysteria" in their calls for a total handgun ban.

He came under attack not only from Labour and the Scottish Nationalists but from a fellow Tory MP, Mr Phil Gallie, who said it was an absolutely stupid and insensitive thing to say.

Mr Carlisle, who lists shooting as one of his recreations, is a fierce opponent of the government's proposals to outlaw most handguns.
