Three separate post office raids which took place in counties Waterford and Wicklow yesterday are not thought to be connected, writes Tim O’Brien

The first took place in Avoca, Co Wicklow, at about 9.10am when two men armed with knives made off on foot with about €2,000. At 10am, two men carrying a gun and a hammer held up and threatened staff at Lismore Post Office in Co Waterford before making off with a bag marked “cash” but which contained only documents.

Two men were later detained following a search of a car in the Dungarvan area.

Shortly after 2pm, the post office in Arklow, Co Wicklow, was raided by a lone man carrying a firearm. Gardaí said he made his escape in a Blue Citroen Saxo car. Anyone with information on any of the raids should contact gardaí.
