Bombs exploded at five houses, including three belonging to police officers, in Baghdad's western outskirts today, killing three people and wounding at least six others, police said.

The attackers struck in the pre-dawn hours in Abu Ghraib and targeted an ambulance driver in addition to the policemen, planting bombs inside and around their homes, police said.

Overall violence has dropped sharply since the worst days of Iraq's sectarian war in 2006-07 but bombings and shootings are still a regular occurrence, often targeting police and government workers.

Police said relatives of the ambulance driver and one of the police officers were killed, along with a person in a home near one of the bomb sites.

"This terrorist act has the fingerprints of al-Qaeda ... they are desperately trying to send a message they still exist," a police officer in the Abu Ghraib district said.

Hundreds of people have been killed since an inconclusive March 7th parliamentary election that has yet to produce a new government.
