Three people have been arrested by gardaí investigating the murder of a Northern Ireland man in Athlone last month.

Three people have been arrested by gardaí investigating the murder of a Northern Ireland man in Athlone last month.

The body of Michael Chambers (51), from Portadown, Co Armagh, was discovered by a woman at a pedestrian underpass close to the banks of the Shannon at around 8 a.m. on Monday, October 13th. He had suffered severe head injuries.

The two men and a woman were held in the Athlone area early this morning and taken to the local Garda station for questioning. They are being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A post-mortem on the body of Mr Chambers by the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, showed he had been repeatedly beaten about the head, neck and back.
